Workshop with PXL Hasselt

Workshop with students of PXL Hasselt on Sustainability and Circularity

At the invitation of PXL Hasselt, Hans Mostmans, Innovation Manager at CRH Group, gave a presentation to 60 students about Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). This presentation was part of their curriculum and aimed to provide students with insights into the environmental impact of building materials and processes. The students also received a tour of the production facilities to better understand the topics discussed in the presentation.

During the presentation, Hans explained how CRH uses LCA to measure and reduce the environmental impact of their products. He emphasized the importance of transparency and sustainability in the construction sector and how EPDs play a crucial role in this. These declarations provide detailed information about the environmental performance of products throughout their entire life cycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life.

A significant part of the presentation was the development of CarbIP, a patented facade system by CRH that improves insulation and can be fully applied in a circular manner. Hans explained how CarbIP contributes to reducing environmental impact and how it fits within CRH’s broader sustainability goals. This innovative system exemplifies CRH’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in their products and processes.

Hans also discussed concrete mix optimization and the use of alternative binders such as blast furnace slag and fly ash to reduce CO2 emissions. He highlighted CRH’s role in developing sustainable building solutions, such as prestressed hollow core slabs and sandwich panels, which contribute to lower environmental impact and higher energy efficiency.

CRH supported this event to share their knowledge and experience with the next generation of construction professionals. The goal was to inspire the students and make them aware of the possibilities and challenges in the field of sustainability in the construction sector. By participating in such events, CRH expands its network and keeps students and future construction professionals informed about the latest developments and trends in the sector.

The interaction with the students was very valuable. CRH learned a lot from their questions and perspectives, which provided new insights into how young professionals think about sustainability and innovation. Such exchanges are essential for promoting a sustainable future in the construction sector. Additionally, CRH emphasized the importance of collaboration with research institutions and the further rollout of ISO14001 environmental management systems within the company.
